Kiwi Innovators on a Winner and it’s No Gimmick
Golfers and golf equipment companies have invented a million and one gimmicks down the years in the search for the key improvement. But while I’m ever keen to improve, I’ve never been into gimmicks.
There’s no point, for example, having a GPS system in your golf cart until you don’t know how far you hit your 7-iron.
I rarely change clubs – regrettably, not even grips! My current Nicklaus Bears which have just had their 10 th birthday replaced the McGregor Tourneys I’d used for 22 years, but were forcibly retired by my need to catch up to the field who were clearly benefiting from the great explosion in technology. I do change the driver and putter occasionally.
Golf is not above perfection, it’s a game about mistakes, damage control, and most of all consistency, the most elusive of golfing goals. That’s why the pros rate top-10 finishes so highly. If they’re up there often enough, victory is inevitable, and a shining example of that is the popular West Australian Nick O’Hern who made the world’s top-30 without winning a tournament! He broke through only late last year by winning the Australian PGA championship at Coolum, and ha since beaten Tiger Woods at the Accenture World Matchplay Championship.
Subsequently, I am hooked on a new Kiwi enterprise called the “Pro-play Fitting System” because it’s all about consistency, which is the name of the game, amateur and professional alike. It’s a clever, simple glove and grip system designed to ensure the same grip on the club for every shot, the grip being probably the single most important fundamental in the game.
It’s a classic story of Kiwi innovation involving the Queenstown club professional Allan McKay, the former Australian club pro Neil McCree, and Mike Oliver, the owner of Powerbilt. McKay credits McCree with a stroke of genius for coming up with the basic concept over a beer at a golf show on the Gold Coast in July 2005. Through the companies office online they punched in “pro-grip” which was available in New Zealand, but not internationally, and a company was born. For international purposes, the company was named “ProPlay”.
Following McGree’s concept, McKay, using his engineering background, designed this model, drawing a line on the glove at the bottom of the palm of the hand, married to a line on the grip, and a thumb pad similarly married to one infused into the grip. He tested it on players, then presented the idea to Mike Oliver, who, through Powerbilt, has the necessary international commercial contacts.
McKay initially checked the legality of the system through the R & A who approved the basic concept, but their first approach to the United States Golf Association during last year’s US Open at Winged Foot seemed to have brought the enterprise to a shuddering halt. “It’s so easy it can’t be legal!” Then, by chance, the group was referred to Carter Rich, the USGA’s equipment rules expert, who declared that the unique design didn’t in any way infringe the rules, wished them luck, and the concept was submitted to theUSGA for $US20 and officially approved. (And why not if the belly putter is legal!).
In all the company has designed 16 different models, covering all bases – three sizes for ladies and juniors, five for men, both right and left-handed, and the grips and gloves are similar to standard prices. Packs of a dozen grips and one glove are also available and sales in only three months are encouraging.
This is no gimmick. As that USGA official said “It’s too easy”. All I need to remember now is to practice, because they haven’t yet come up with the aid that improves our game anywhere near as much as regular time on the range!

Pro Play Fitting System
As golfers, we are constantly subjected to advertisements for products that are guaranteed to reduce your handicap by up to any number of shots, and after you have signed up or paid up, you discover they are simply variations on an old theme.
Every once in a while, you come across one that not only has merit, but its real appeal is really determined by its simplicity, and you wonder how it is that no one, particularly yourself, had not thought of it before. The Pro Play Fitting System is one of those products.
Consistency is the key to good golf, and the only way to achieve that is by continued practice, to the point where each component of the swing becomes second nature. In the Pro Play Fitting System, a means of achieving a consistently perfect grip has been established simply by matching both the gloved hand and the bottom hand to the grip, by means of identifying markings. An angled line across the palm of the glove indicates the positioning of the grip in the glove, combined with matching color coded spots on the thumb of the glove and the grip itself, determining the placement of the thumb on the grip. An inverted “v” further down the grip gives the correct positioning of the “v” created by the thumb and forefinger of the bottom hand, and ensures a perfect grip every time. Obviously, not all players have the same size hands, and this too has been accommodated, with a number of color coded glove sizes, corresponding to their respective color coded grips.
What is even more exciting is that the product is another fine example of Kiwi ingenuity, having been developed from an idea from Neil McCree and Alan McKay, the professionals at Queenstown Golf Club. They in turn discussed it with Christchurch-based Mike Oliver, who holds the New Zealand franchise/distributorship for Power Bilt, who immediately saw the product’s potential and became involved in its development.
Interestingly enough, the product has earned the support of Tiger Woods’ caddie, Steve Williams, who advised that it was not uncommon for a number of the world’s best golfers to check their grip as part of the pre-shot routine. Williams also commented that it was the best game improvement product he had seen. The simplicity of the product makes it as invaluable to the learner as it does to the seasoned golfer, making it an ideal teaching aid.
To make use of the system, your clubs will need to be regripped and in keeping with the rest of the product development, a simple clip on system ensures that the grip has been aligned correctly.
The New Zealand release in December will be a world first, followed by Australia in January with an introduction to the American market via the golf expo in Florida.
There is little doubt that its anticipated impact on the golfing world will be realized for two very good reasons.
It is simple and it works.

Get a Grip with the ProPlay Fitting System
AA Golf Product Review
By Jeff Ritter
At its most basic level, playing good golf comes down to three things: grip, alignment and swing. The ProPlay Fitting System—which hit the U.S.and Canada market this year—won’t aim you in the right direction, nor will it hit the shot for you. But it just might, if you follow its simple instructions, show you the way to a proper, neutral grip each and every time you hit a shot.
Initially launched in New Zealand last December, the ProPlay Fitting System comes to America as a set of 12 grips and one glove (Or, four grips and one glove for juniors.) To use the system, golfers must replace their existing grips with those from ProPlay—for some, particularly elite players, this might be too big a compromise. But for beginner-to-intermediate players, the Pro/Grips offer durability and “feel” that’s comparable to most other brands.
After the grips are installed (instructions are included) it’s time to slip on the Pro/Glove. Lines on the palm correspond to a line on the grip. Wrap your hands around the club so that the lines match up, then place your thumb on the spot stamped on the grip. For the right hand (on a right-handed golfer), the “V” between your thumb and index finger should match up to the inverted “V” marked on the grip. With that, you’ve gripped it; now all you have to do is rip it.
Gaining USGA approval of the product took some time. After all, the vast majority of golfers practice and play with the same set—it wouldn’t make much sense to have illegal grips installed. An official ruling from the USGA stating that the product did conform to the Rules of Golf arrived this summer, and with that, the ProPlay Fitting System is now legal for sanctioned play.
The USGA’s decision also removes the system from the vast list of golf gadgets and gimmicks, and places it into a much smaller class. “It’s not a training aid; it’s a playing aid,” says a grinning Floyd DelMuro, managing partner of Pro Play North America.
Now the ProPlay Fitting System is trickling into pro shops and retail stores around the country, and the product even boasts a celebrity spokesman: New Zealand’s own Steve Williams, caddie to Tiger Woods.
OUR REVIEW
At $110 for a set of 12 grips and a glove, the big question we had left to answer: Is it worth it?
The Pro/Grips feel similar to most other brands and showed virtually no attrition after our two-week trial—something that would be expected from other high-end grips. The Pro/Glove showed a little wear in the palm, but it was nothing one wouldn’t anticipate from big-name products like Footjoy or Callaway after a comparable amount of use.
Regarding functionality, an intermediate player who’s developed some bad habits over the years could get back in form quickly with the ProPlay Fitting System. One teaching pro took our outfitted 7-iron and immediately declared, “This is the perfect, neutral grip.”
Some players will need some time, and possibly even a swing lesson, to work out some of the kinks as the hips, arms and hands adjust to the new grip position. Players who aren’t serious about improving their games, or are unwilling to struggle through a couple of ugly practice sessions should pass on the ProPlay Fitting System. Also, our teaching pro suggested that the system may still require quite a bit of guidance for a novice golfer who has every fundamental in the book still to conquer.
But for players with handicaps ranging from 15 to, say, 30, who know the basics and maybe even have had some success along the way, finding a consistent, neutral grip could very well unlock the key to more reliable ball-striking—and lower scores. If your handicap falls within this range (For most of us, it does), and you’re willing to put some extra work into building a consistent swing, the ProPlay Fitting System would make an excellent addition to your bag.

2-2-2
The ProPlay Glove and Grip Fitting System consist of two components – glove and the grip. Both components feature instructional markings which work together to guide the hand and the grip. When the two components are perfectly paired the union creates the perfect grip.
According to ProPlay Executive Donna Del Muro, “We are honored to receive this notable award. We know that the judges test many great products and for ProPlay to come up a Top GearAward winner is thrilling.”
ProPlay fits seamlessly. The grip dimensions are specifically designed to match your glove size. Five custom grip and glove offerings are available for men, three for women and three for juniors.
What distinguishes the ProPlay Glove and Grip Fitting System from other training aids is that it is considered a playing aid that can be used on the driving range and on the golf course as it conforms to USGA Rules per decision 2007-450.
The ProPlay Glove and Grip Fitting System was developed by seasoned golf professionals Neil McCree and Alan McKay from Queenstown Club in New Zealand, the two boast over 65 combined years of coaching. The concept stemmed from their numerous discussions on teaching the fundamentals of the perfect grip. Nationwide golf distributor Mike Oliver joined the pair and was instrumental in developing samples and obtaining a USGA approval.
A savvy Oliver then procured an endorsement from Kiwi native Steve Williams, caddy to the greatest golfer in the modern era, Tiger Woods. He states, “This is the most revolutionary product to come onto the market in years.”

We were given a set of grips and a glove at the 2007 PGA show for my daughter. She was 9 years old at the time. After putting on the grips, she was very precise from that moment on with her grip. Every time she hits a shot, she always checks her grip so carefully with the lines and the dots, and she never hurriedly takes a grip and hits the ball. She is very particular about it. As a matter of fact when she got a new set of clubs, she didnt want to play untill we located you and got her a new set of grips for her new
I think it is the BEST teaching aid for juniors and new players, due to the fact the grip is so very important and so easy to forget for beginners. Plus it eliminates the question, "Am I doing this right?"
I teach beginners and juniors here at Errol Estate and I plan on selling this to every new student I have in the future.

I heard about your company from my GolfTec instructor here in Georgia. Was
in for a lesson one day and your sales rep had stoppped by earlier and
dropped off some grips and gloves. I put the glove on and he showed me how
to use it and I was totally amazed by how much it helped my swing. My grip
has always been a source of problems with my swing and your system help me
straighten it. Decided to order a set of grips and a glove for my clubs so
I can ensure that I'm always holding the club correctly when I'm playing.
Very nice system you've designed.
